One Hoop at a Time – Traumatic Brain Injury is a Family Affair
A Traumatic Brain Injury doesn’t only happen to a single individual. It happens to the entire family. In my situation, when I was coming home, I was able to do more than my family wanted me to do or was willing to let me do. I was able to more than my parents wanted me to do, and they actually made me stop doing things I wanted to do and could do. I understand they were worried for me, but they tried too hard to care for and do things for me, which slightly hindered my recovery. Even now, almost eight years later, when I’m extremely high functioning, they still want to coddle me instead of letting me test the waters to see how far I’ve progressed like every therapist suggests we should do. It isn’t what I wanted, but the injury din’t just affect me, it affected everyone in my entire family. sometimes it helps to remember that it isn’t just me that had to deal with this injury, it was everyone in my family that’s why therapy for caregivers and the injured is so important..
